What one thing unifies all great leaders? They all understand one universal truth.  That people are a businesses most valuable asset.  Without great employees, a business is nothing.

Recruiters and managers often wax lyrical about ‘dream teams’ and ‘a-players’ but how many can truly say they have built and maintain these ‘dream teams’?

With increasing numbers of businesses looking to work with freelancers, contractors, and agencies – particularly for marketing and tech its rare to find organisations that embody the ethos that people are a businesses most valuable asset.

So… how do you find and retain the A team?

Make them an offer they cant refuse

This could be the single most obvious piece of advice, so we’ll put it right here at the top of the list…

Top talent doesn’t come cheap.  If you’re running a smaller business or margins are tight, just higher fewer people.  Quality over quantity. Always.

Make them feel special

Often times, even A player employees and candidates can feel like a number or just another cog in the machine.

Let them know that isn’t the case – nothing lights a fire under peoples motivations like feeling heard, and respected.

Dont just rely on the permanent employee market

Not necessarily just cash… although it wouldn’t hurt.

If you know theres talent out in the agency or contractor market, set up a short project to get them onboard and bought into your business.

This also has the benefit of giving you a months long interview before extending them a permanent offer.

Get people bought in

Talented folks crave exciting projects, and businesses with purpose. Convincing them to join your vision is as important as convincing investors. If you can get a team aligned with the businesses wider mission, you’re sure to get them onboard and keep them motivated.

What if none of this works?

Sometimes you just cant get that ‘yes’, but its essential to get the ‘why’.  Make sure you’re asking why offers are being refused, and why employees are taking alternative positions.

If the answers is ‘money’ too many times – you’ve got a serious problem.  If the ONLY reason people are working for you is money, you need to take a look at your businesses mission.
